Chosen Title: Flesh By David Szalay

Teenaged István grows up shy and isolated in a quiet Hungarian apartment complex, struggling to connect with his peers and his mother. After a tragedy shatters his childhood, his life is shaped by the goodwill and self-interest of strangers, carrying him far from home. Flesh follows a man at odds with his past, exploring the lasting impact of trauma in modern Europe through spare, powerful prose.

Chosen Title: Ella Minnow Pea

Ella Minnow Pea lives on the island of Nollop, named after the author of the pangram “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” When letters fall from his memorial statue, the Council bans their use, and as language disappears, so do the islanders’ freedoms, with the novel itself dropping those letters along the way. Witty and poignant, it follows one young woman’s fight for freedom of expression.
