The American Club Singapore Welcomes New General Manager Richard Coate


November 2020 (Singapore) - The American Club Singapore is proud to welcome Rick Coate as The Club’s new General Manager. Coate’s remarkable career spans multiple continents and more than 30 years’ service and management experience.
Coate began his stellar club management career in 2002, running some of Australia’s most renowned golf clubs before taking over as the General Manager of the prestigious Hong Kong Cricket Club in 2012. After a three-and-a-half-year stint at the helm, he moved back to Australia where he managed the esteemed Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron. There, he also served as Sports Project Manager at Melbourne Cricket Club before taking over as CEO of Disabled Wintersport Australia.
Now, his career brings him back to Asia. “My wife is Malaysian and we enjoy the food (especially spicy food, such as the beef rendang!) and warm weather. It’s good to be in Singapore. I love the friendly people, cleanliness and beauty of this island, and we have many friends here.” 
In addition to his expansive and impressive management portfolio, Coate has undertaken formal management training and post-graduate education at some of the world’s most reputable programs. His educational background extends across a wide range of service-based industries, including an MBA in Sports Management from Deakin University and a professional certification from Harvard University. 
About his new position, Coate says, “The American Club, which celebrated its 72nd anniversary in September this year, is one of the most iconic Clubs in Asia. Not only is it innovative and friendly by nature, but prestigious and progressive. The opportunity to be a custodian of The Club and to lead a diverse team in the city of Singapore is a career pinnacle.”
Coate shared that his focuses are to get to know the Members and staff as quickly as possible through regular General Manager Listening & Learning Tours, to work closely with the General Committee, all Committees, and the Management team on The Club’s strategy to optimize revenue streams, operational efficiencies, and service improvements. The ultimate goals are to maximize Members’ satisfaction and The Club’s profitability.
Coate brings an empathetic, relationship-based, and outcome-focused management approach.  When asked how he inspires loyalty and trust among staff, Rick shares, “By providing a safe environment where my team can grow and be happy; by recognizing their contributions no matter how small; leading by example with empathy; by understanding that mistakes are learning opportunities which help us improve. Quoting Sir Richard Branson - “Look after your staff and they will look after your customers”.

Keeping Your Belongings Safe by the Pool

Dear Aquatics Supporter,


We hope you are enjoying The American Club swim program. Thanks to your support, the program enrolment has seen good growth. I am reaching out to you with a request that will help enhance the experience for Members using the pool area.


Due to the current safe distancing measures required by the government, seating at the Grillhouse has been reduced since The Club reopened on June 19. To help alleviate the demand for tables for Grillhouse diners, we have placed two tables along the side of Grillhouse, and along the wall where the pool lockers are, for swimmers to place their belongings while swimming. This will help to free up the tables for Grillhouse diners.


I am writing to request your support in asking our young swimmers to use these side tables to place their belongings while they are in the water. We also encourage our swimmers to use the poolside lockers, by getting a key from the Aquatics Counter. 


With your help and support, we can keep the tables and chairs available for use by your fellow Members who are dining. We greatly appreciate your efforts and consideration as we strive to create a better poolside experience for all Members.

New Parking Guidance System at The Club

Here's how it works:


• An indicator panel is located at the car park entrance. It displays the number of available parking lots in Basements 1 and 2.

• There are more indicator panels installed within various levels of the car park. 

• When both Basement 1 and Basement 2 car parks are full, the indicator panel will display "FULL".

• The usual valet services will continue to be available to assist with parking.

• Motorbikes are excluded from the vehicle count.

Considerate Use of Limited Capacity at Grillhouse

• As with all other Club restaurants, seating capacity at Grillhouse has been reduced due to safe distancing requirements.

• If your belongings are placed on the table unattended for 15 minutes, Grillhouse staff will remove your belongings to free up the table for other Members who are waiting.

• We appeal to all Members to show consideration to fellow Club Members by not hoarding tables if they are not physically present.

• If you or your family members are participating in swim classes, please store your personal belongings in the poolside lockers instead.
